    Where do I access my child's MAP Growth results in ParentConnect?

     

    MAP Growth assessment results are in the Assessment Results section of ParentConnect.  Select the "+" sign to expand the section.

    Why does my child take MAP Growth?

    MAP Growth is a benchmark assessment required by the state of Alaska for students in grades 3-9 as part of the Alaska System of Academic Readiness (AK STAR).  MAP Growth is administered in the fall and winter as stand-alone benchmark assessments in mathematics, reading and language usage.  In the spring, MAP Growth is an integrated component of the AK STAR summative English Language Arts (reading and language usage benchmarks) and mathematics (mathematics benchmark) assessments to provide both summative and benchmark results.

     

    Alaska's Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has partnered with NWEA (MAP Growth) to implement a creative approach to balanced statewide assessment that better reflects learning throughout the school year and helps educators target instruction to students' individual needs.  For more information about this balanced assessment approach, please visit the DEED AK STAR website, .

    NWEA MAP Growth also provides resources for understanding each sub test.

     

    The sample report that follows shows what MAP Growth results look like in ParentConnect.  The example is labeled with the letters A through J.  Each letter corresponds to a specific piece of information about MAP Growth results, which is provided in more detail on the following pages.  Please contact your child’s principal, teacher or counselor for more support with understanding MAP Growth scores.

     

     

    What do MAP Growth scores mean?

    A.  Test

    This is the assessment name, MAP Growth.

     

    B.  Term

    The Term is the time of the year or the window when the assessment was taken.  MAP Growth Terms (Windows) are fall, winter and spring.

     

    C.  Date Taken

    This is the date a student takes the assessment during the fall, winter or spring term or window.

     

     

    D.  Grade

    This is the student’s grade level on test day.

     

     

    E.  Sub Test

    This is the name of the assessments and test version based on grade level:  Reading (2-5 or 6+), Mathematics (2-5 or 6+) and/or Language Usage (2-12)

     

     

    F.  RIT

    The middle number is the student's overall RIT score for the term. The numbers on either side of the RIT score define the RIT range. If retested soon, the student's score would fall within this range most of the time.

     

    RIT stands for Rasch Unit, which is a unit of measure that uses individual test question difficulty values to estimate student achievement. A RIT score is independent of the age or grade of the student but reflects the instructional level where a student is ready to learn, helping teachers plan instruction at an appropriate level for the student.

     

     

    G.  Goal Perf = Goal Performance Areas (Shown in Boxes on Sample)

    A goal area is a learning area within a subject. Each goal area included in the test is listed along with a description of the student's score based on the percentile earned for each goal area as outlined here:

    • Low: percentile < 21
    • Low Average: percentile between 21 and 40
    • Average: percentile between 41 and 60
    • High Average: percentile between 61 and 80
    • High: percentile > 80
    • An asterisk (*) is displayed if the goal score could not be calculated due to too many items answered incorrectly or too few items available in the RIT range assessed

    H.    Percent = Percentile Rank

    The student’s percentile rank is the percentage of students who had a RIT score less than or equal to this score as observed in the NWEA norms study. This allows the student to be compared to similar students across the nation who took MAP Growth during the same term or window.

     

     

    I.   Duration

    The amount of time, in minutes, a student took on a MAP Growth test. On average, MAP Growth assessments, though untimed, take about an hour.

     

     

    J.    Lexile—Reading Only

    Lexile provides a range of text complexity that helps teachers identify level-appropriate reading material for individual students.
